Everything we know about The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel

The Elder Scrolls VI is officially titled Sentinel, runs on Creation Engine 3, and points squarely at Hammerfell. Here's everything confirmed so far — and what still isn't.

The name

The game is officially called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. Todd Howard revealed the title on November 3, 2026, at the end of a video — under ten minutes — celebrating 40 years of Bethesda Game Studios. Howard called it the “perfect time” to name the game, and Xbox CEO Asha Sharma marked the occasion by posting that “SENTINEL is the next chapter of The Elder Scrolls.”

The name had surfaced days earlier: The Verge reported the Sentinel subtitle on October 29, 2026, ahead of the official confirmation.

The teaser text

The reveal closed with a short passage of teaser text — the only piece of in-world writing released so far:

“The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate.” — Yazar, Moth Priest to High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell (4E 206). “Your next journey to Tamriel will be in The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel.”

Four names appear for the first time: Yazar, a Moth Priest; High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell; the province of Hammerfell itself; and the date 4E 206 — five years after the events of Skyrim, which is set in 4E 201. The teaser does not say the whole game takes place in 4E 206.

Story hints

The Verge reported that the main story focuses on the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves and on uncovering the secrets of the artifacts. That fits the teaser’s framing: its narrator is a Moth Priest — a member of the order trained to read the Scrolls — and the text reads like a prophecy half-glimpsed.

The setting

The teaser explicitly names Hammerfell, home of the Redguards. The Verge had reported Hammerfell as the game’s setting in late October. It’s also consistent with the 2018 teaser’s rugged, sunlit coastal landscape, which fans debated between Hammerfell and High Rock for years.

Sentinel itself is a real place in the series: a major port city and kingdom on the Iliac Bay in northern Hammerfell, prominent in Daggerfall and The Elder Scrolls Online. Whether the title refers to the city, something else, or both hasn’t been said.

Engine

The Elder Scrolls VI runs on Creation Engine 3. In a July 2026 note, Bethesda Game Studios confirmed: “Our teams are now developing The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 on Creation Engine 3, a shared technology platform we’ve been building since Starfield’s launch.” Todd Howard described the game in February 2026 as a “classic Bethesda” RPG in the vein of Oblivion and Skyrim.

Release and platforms

Bethesda hasn’t announced a release date or a platform list. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported in July 2026 that the game is at least two years away — no earlier than 2028. Leaked Microsoft documents from the 2023 FTC trial projected Windows and Xbox, but platforms were undecided at that stage. No gameplay was shown with the name reveal; The Verge noted “Bethesda isn’t sharing any more details today.”

Development status

TES6 is Bethesda Game Studios’ primary project. In the July 2026 note the studio said it is “our primary development focus today, with the majority of our team currently working on the next chapter” and added: “We’re where we planned to be, loving how it looks, and playing it every day.”

The picture isn’t entirely smooth — IGN reported in July 2026 that more than 50 Bethesda Game Studios staff were laid off in Xbox restructuring — but the studio’s public line is that the game is on track.
